The trail is on public Forest Preserve in the Cranberry Lake Wild Forest Area, and can either be accessed from Route 3, just east of the Cranberry Lake Campground, or at a trailhead within the campground, which charges a day-use fee. This trail goes past the First, Second, and Third Reservoirs. This trail can also be done as an out-and-back by just hiking the southern portion along the reservoirs. The northern part of the trail passes over Big Hill where there is a backcountry camping shelter. This is a good place to stop and rest.
