I disassemble the Getrag 260 gearbox out of my 91 E30 325iX again.First, this does not apply to the 260 trans, only 265s. Like Tom says, there are 2 changes. First, there is a drive gear on the trans output shaft that is replaced by a spacer bushing on the M3 trans. Second, there is a hole in the trans rear case part that has a sheet metal plug, kind of like a freeze plug in a block, that has to be pried out.M50 manual cars got ZF and Getrag M30 manual cars came with Getrags. From what I have read the ZF is the more sought after and stronger trans for the M50. M30 cars come with the Getrag 260 and it is pretty much bulletproof.
